Israel demolishes structures in East Jerusalem and in the South Hebron Hills

Three structures belonging to Palestinians were demolished on Tuesday in East Jerusalem, along with a home and several structures in southern West Bank, continuing a recent surge in demolitions across the occupied Palestinians territories.

In East Jerusalem, Israeli bulldozers destroyed a mobile home in Beit Hanina, and in the neighbourhood of Silwan and the village of Jabal al-Mukabbir, residents were forced to demolish their own property.

Imad al-Abbasy from Silwan said he had to demolish his half-built apartment after an Israeli order gave his family 24 hours to either do so or to incur the municipality’s demolition costs, Ma’an News reported.

Khader Obeidat, from the East Jerusalem village of Jabal al-Mukabbir was also forced to demolish his shop.

He stated that he carried out the demolition himself to avoid damaging the shop next door and the costs of demolition demanded by Jerusalem municipality.

According to human rights group B’Tselem, Israeli authorities also demolished a home in the community of Khirbet Jenbah in the Masafer Yatta area of the Southern Hebron Hills.

Solar panels donated by an international aid agency were confiscated in the process, the group added.

A spokesperson for Israel's Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories said the demolition measures were taken against structures “which had been built illegally and without the relevant orders in a firing zone.”

Earlier this month, B’Tselem condemned what it considered an “unusually massive demolition campaign” of demolitions in the West Bank, which left 435 Palestinians homeless since January.

“These demolition operations impose an intolerable reality on the residents of the communities,” the human rights group said.

“This governmental policy, implemented systematically for years, constitutes the forced transfer of protected Palestinian residents within the occupied area”, they added.
