Hebron neighbourhood declared a closed military zone

Israeli forces have issued an order to make al-Shuhada Street and the Tel Rumeida neighbourhood in Hebron a closed military zone, reports Ma’an News.

The neighbourhood has been canvassed by Israeli forces to create a list of residents who will be given permits to pass the checkpoints.

Local shops have been forced to close indefinitely. Israeli officials claim this is one of the measures designed to prevent future attacks in Hebron.

The old city of Hebron has been divided in recent years. In 1997, the city was officially separated into the H1 Palestinian area and the H2 Israeli-controlled area housing around 800 hardline settlers, protected by at least twice as many soldiers.

Roads such as the once-thriving al-Shuhada street, which lead to illegal settlements, have been sealed off, enabling settlers access to their homes without encountering Palestinians and creating a shuttered-up ghost town. This is being countered by the Hebron Rehabilitation Committee who are attempting to restore large parts of the old city.

Checkpoints and barriers separating H1 from H2 have been focal points for violence in the past month. On Thursday morning, two Palestinians were killed by Israeli forces in the old town after alleged stabbing incidents.

19-year-old Farouk Abdel Sidr was killed on Shuhada Street and 23-year-old Mahdi Mohammad Ramadan al-Muhtasib was killed near the Ibrahim mosque.

Since Oct. 1, over 15 Palestinians have been killed in Hebron, with the victims predominantly perpetrating alleged stabbings. Five bodies (all minors) have recently been returned to their families, but a number are still being held by Israeli authorities.
