Clashes broke out between Israeli forces and Palestinians in the Old City of Jerusalem this morning after Israeli soldiers entered Al Aqsa mosque compound on the final day of the Muslim festival Eid Al Adha.

Witnesses claimed that Israeli forces entered the compound through both the Moroccan Gate and the Chain Gate, and proceeded to fire stun grenades and rubber coated bullets at worshippers, Ma’an News Agency reports.

Tensions have been running high in the Old City in recent weeks after Israeli forces launched a raid on Al Aqsa compound Sept. 13.

The area is holy to both Islam and Judaism, and for years, a status quo has allowed Muslims to pray at Al Aqsa and Jews at the Western Wall nearby.

Israeli forces have maintained a high security presence in the Old City since the raid; they have restricted Muslim access to Al Aqsa compound while allowing Jewish groups to tour the site.

Many Palestinians fear the Israeli authorities are attempting to alter the status quo at Al Aqsa and gain increased control over the compound.

Israeli Defence Minister Moshe Ya’alon instructed Israeli police to allow Muslims unrestricted access to Al Aqsa today, the final day of Eid Al Adha, and to prevent Jewish groups from accessing the compound, The Times of Israel reports.

Ma’an News Agency reports that some right-wing Jewish groups encouraged their supporters to pray inside Al Aqsa compound today to mark the start of the Jewish Feast of Tabernacles holiday, Sukkot. Jews are not permitted to pray within the compound under current rules governing the site.

The Speaker of the joint Arab list in the Israeli Knesset, Ayman Odeh, wrote on Facebook Sunday that Palestinian citizens of Israel would gather at Al Aqsa over the next few days to "counter Israeli plots to divide Al-Aqsa Mosque between Muslims and Jews."
