On October 1, clashes broke out across the West Bank, Jerusalem and Gaza as part of a general strike against the controversial new 'Nation-state Law.’

The law was passed by the Israeli Knesset in July, despite national and international condemnation.

At the northern entrance of Ramallah, near the illegal settlement of Beit El, Palestinian protesters set tires on fire and utilised slingshots to throw rocks at Israeli Defense Forces (IDF).
The IDF responded with rubber-coated steel bullets, tear gas and sound bombs.
One journalist was taken to hospital from tear gas inhalation, while another was wounded after being shot in the foot with a rubber coated steel bullet.

Clashes also erupted in Jerusalem, in which five Palestinians were injured from rubber coated steel bullets and 10 more suffered from tear gas inhalation.
Nablus and Qalqiliya also saw clashes, where Israeli forces fired live ammunition and sound bombs.
At Qalandiya checkpoint a peaceful protest was targeted by Israeli forces, who injured six Palestinians with live rounds whilst also deploying rubber coated steel bullets and tear gas.
In Gaza over 90 people were injured when Israeli forces fired live rounds and rubber-coated bullets at protesters.
Thirty-seven Palestinians were shot with live rounds and transferred to hospitals for medical treatment.

The protests were organised to coincide with the general strike, in protest of the nation state law, as well as the planned Israeli demolition of Bedouin village Khan al-Ahmar, west of Jerusalem.

The Nation State Law enshrines the State of Israel as the nation state and historical homeland of the Jewish people.
It also outlines Jerusalem as its capital and Hebrew as its only official language, demoting the status of Arabic from an official language to one with “special status”.
Israeli Arabs currently make up 1.8 million of the total population of nine million - roughly 20% - yet the law demands only Jewish people have the exclusive right to self-determination.
