A Palestinian woman allegedly detonated a car bomb near al-Zayim checkpoint on the road to Jerusalem Sunday morning, injuring herself and one Israeli police officer.

The vehicle the woman was driving in was reportedly pulled over by Israeli forces as she was driving in a lane reserved for buses and cars carrying multiple passengers.

The woman allegedly exited her vehicle, shouted “allahu akhbar” and detonated an explosive device.

The  Palestinian woman, identified as a 31 year old resident of Jericho, is being treated for moderate wounds, and an Israeli police officer for light wounds.

The al-Zayim checkpoint was closed following the incident.

Ma’an News Agency reports that a Palestinian eyewitness countered the report made by Israeli authorities. The witness claimed that the woman had a child in the car with her, and that a small fire was started inside the vehicle due to electrical problems.

The witness also observed that the woman started to scream in panic, but Israeli forces prevented her from exiting the car.

Initial investigations into the incident allegedly uncovered unexploded gas canisters in the car, which could have caused much greater damage.

According to The Jerusalem Post, a military source stated that the woman may be a part of a cell planning to carry out further attacks.

The Israel Police Foreign Press Spokesman has lauded the police officer on the scene for preventing the woman from reaching Jerusalem.

Six knife attacks have taken place in Jerusalem in the past week, leading Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to reinforce police units across the city, stating that “a reinforced presence is a preventive and deterrent measure that assists in maintaining order.”
