Since the disappearance of the three Israeli settler teens, Naftali Frankel, 16, Eyal Yifrah, 16, and Gilad Shaer, 19, late last Thursday evening, thousands of Israelis have 'liked’ a Facebook page titled, “Until the boys are back, every hour we shoot a terrorist.”
The page, created shortly after news of the boys’ disappearance broke, has since amassed over 19,000 likes, an alarmingly high figure that has continued to rise throughout Wednesday afternoon.  Most of the comments on the page demand the Israeli government adopt a more aggressive approach in its attempts to locate the three teenagers. In one post, the page administrator wrote, “Bibi [Netanyahu] seems to be having trouble finding terrorists to kill so [on here] we are helping him.” This is followed by a photograph which reads, “return to Jewish war ethics: kill or be killed. Kill a terrorist every hour”.
In a series of replies, commentators have requested that this rate increase. “Speak of killing them every minute not hour,” Golda Levin wrote. “This is time we do not have! There are a lot of terrorists”. To which another commentator replies, “give me the gun, I’ll do it for fun”.
The disturbing popularity of this Facebook page provides an insight into the recent social media storm which has seen thousands of Israelis taking to Twitter to support campaigns demanding that Palestinians #BringBackOurBoys. Initiated by the IDFspokesperson account, the hashtag has become the symbol of the search for the three missing teenagers. Yesterday the office #BringBackOurBoys Facebook page said over 150 billboards and bus signs bearing the slogan would be put across Jerusalem.
Palestinians and activists have also taken to social media to reclaim the hashtag and expose what they deem to be the hypocrisy behind such a campaign. “#BringBackOurBoys and our girls and our loved ones and our comrades and our past and our future and our dreams,” tweeted Gaza Writes Back. According to a recent report released by UNICEF, more than 8,000 children have been arrested since the year 2000, with the Israeli military court conviction rate standing at 99.74 percent.
Since the search operations began on late Thursday night, hundreds have been arrested throughout the West Bank, several injured and one killed.
