A Palestinian shot and injured three IDF soldiers this sunday at a military checkpoint near the illegal israeli settlement of Beit El in the occupied West Bank district of Ramallah, according to Ma’an News Agency. The Palestinian was shot dead at the site.

Witnesses said that the Palestinian opened fire from the window of his car, while it was stopped for inspection at the checkpoint. He shot at the soldier who approached his car and two others.

The IDF responded immediately, opening fire at the Palestinian who died at the scene.

Of the three soldiers injured, two were reported being in severe conditions.

The Palestinian was later identified as Amjad Jaser Sukkar,34, a police officer staff of the Palestinian Authority.

According to the Jerusalem Post, the Palestinian police released a statement after the attack praising the police officer who carried the attack, calling him a martyr.

Hamas spokesman Sami Abu Zuhri said, “this attack showcases the rejection of security coordination with the occupation, even among members of the PA security forces,” calling it a “heroic resistance operation.”

As a result of the attack, Israeli forces shut down most Ramallah district roads. Drivers were allowed to travel from surrounding villages to Ramallah city, but were prohibited from leaving Ramallah to go back to their villages, Ma’an News Agency reported.

The attack is one of many since a wave of violence escalated across the occupied Palestinian territories and Israel in October 2015. Over 160 Palestinians and 20 Israelis have been killed in the violence.
