7 civilians injured by Israeli gunboat in Gaza, “We won’t accept this any longer”

22 January 2009

Ramallah, 22-01-09: Mustafa Barghouthi, the Secretary General of the Palestinian National initiative strongly condemns this morning Israeli naval attack on Gaza fishermen.

On Tuesday morning, the Israeli navy shelled the Northern shores of the Gaza Strip and opened fire on civilians, injuring 7 Palestinians including 5 fishermen.

“This shows once more that Israel’s so-called “withdrawal” as claimed by the Israeli officials and portrayed in the press, is no withdrawal at all. Israel remains in control of the border, land, sea and air of the Gaza Strip and are still continuing in their policy of siege and occupation over Gaza and the West Bank”, stated Mustafa Barghouthi.

“The air strikes and ground invasion may have stopped, but we won’t accept the Palestinian daily life to return to previous ‘normality’”, said the Deputy. “That ‘normality’ was a burden heavier than any people could ever carry. It is filled with daily killings and targeted assassinations, aggressions and humiliations carried by the Israeli forces. No country in the world would ever accept such a fate for its civilians, no country would accept its people to live in a constant fear.”

Two young Palestinians have died today after succumbing to wounds sustained during the Israeli military offensive on Gaza.

As of today, the death toll resulting in the 3-weeks bloody attacks on Gaza as reached 1,330 people killed, including 417 children and 110 women and 5,347 injured.

The numbers of casualties is expected to rise by the days as more bodies are uncovered from the rubbles and others succumb to previous wounds.
