The Palestine Monitor, was set up in December 2000, just a few months after the start of the second Intifada. It works to present the occupation of Palestine from a Palestinian perspective, and to highlight that a credible lasting peace settlement is only possible with full scale democracy, equality for Palestinians, and internationally recognized human rights that are clearly implemented and adhered to across Israel and Palestine.
We are currently seeking volunteers to support our small and dedicated team based in Ramallah, to travel throughout Palestine researching and reporting on the evolving humanitarian, political and human rights situation, and to collect testimonies directly from Palestinians.
Duties and responsibilities include:
Researching and writing original web content, including news items, reports, in-depth feature articles, eyewitness accounts, and photo stories.
Developing new fact sheets on key issues, and update existing fact sheets.
Assisting with other projects as and when necessary, as part of the Palestine Monitor team.
Updating and maintaining the website.
Essential
University-level education in Middle Eastern studies, International Relations, Social Sciences, Journalism or related field; OR related work experience and training providing solid working knowledge of the history and dynamics of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.
Excellent English language skills. Non-native English speakers with a good level of spoken and written English are also welcome.
Excellent writing and conceptual skills. Ability to identify, structure and write stories with minimal supervision.
Resourcefulness and ability to work and travel independently and under minimal supervision.
Desired
Previous work experience in Palestine, or on the Palestinian issue.
Experience in journalism or academic writing.
Experience of photography.
Knowledge of spoken and written Arabic. Other languages such as Spanish, Italian and/or French are also an advantage.
Experience of media, lobbying and advocacy.
This position is UNPAID. Palestine Monitor will provide accommodation for volunteers however.
