A Palestinian was shot and killed after allegedly attempting to attack an Israeli soldier at a military checkpoint in the occupied West Bank north of Nablus early this afternoon, the IDF has confirmed.

According to Ma’an News Agency, the Palestinian resided in the village of Asira Ash-Shamalyia, close to where the incident took place, and was identified by local residents as Haitham Mahmoud Abd Al-Jalil, 31.

According to Haaretz, Al-Jalil attempted to stab a soldier stationed at the checkpoint, leaving the latter “slightly wounded” on the hand. Israeli forces responded, opening fire. Al-Jalil was killed on scene.

Al-Jalil is the second Palestinian killed in the occupied West Bank today and the twelfth this week.

Muayyad Awni Jabbarin was killed this morning in the southern occupied West Bank city of Hebron, near the Beit Einun junction. Muayyad was the fourth killed in that same location this week.

The number of Palestinians killed by Israeli forces in the occupied Palestinian territories has been escalating since Oct. 2015. Over 150 Palestinians and 20 Israelis have been killed over that same period.
