The PA presented with Jordanian-Palestinian confederation

The Palestinian Authority has no interest in a formation of a Jordanian-Palestinian confederation as an apparent substitute for an independent Palestinian state.

Speaking to Israeli movement Peace Now and Israeli lawmakers in Ramallah on Sunday, PA President Mahmoud Abbas revealed that he had been offered a political plan by the United States negotiating team that was based on the formation of a federation.

According to Haaretz, Abbas has announced US President Donald Trump’s advisor and son-in-law Jared Kushner, and the US Middle East envoy Jason Greenblatt that he will only agree such a political plan if Israel is a part of the confederation.

“I was asked if I believe in a federation with Jordan,” Abbas said, adding, “I answered: Yes, I want a confederation with Jordan and Israel. I have asked the Israelis if they would agree to such an offer.”

At the same time, Jordan on Sunday rejected the idea of a confederation between the PA and the Hashemite Kingdom as a part of a solution to the Israel-PA conflict.

Jumana Ghunaimat, a spokeswoman for the Jordanian government, said “a confederation between Jordan and Palestine is not up for discussion.”

She added that Jordan’s position on the issue is based on a two-state solution and the establishment of a Palestinian state on the pre-1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital.

The offer from the United States was also blasted by MK Ahmed Tibi of the Joint List in an interview on Army Radio Sunday.

“Donald Trump doesn’t understand the conflict. He has no connection with what is going on here. He’s an anti-Palestinian president who is surrounded by messianic advisers,” the former advisor to the late PA chairman Yasser Arafat said.

While the Trump administration’s 'peace’-plan is yet to be revealed, Trump has hailed it as the “deal of the century.

According to the Israeli intelligence website DEBKAfile, the plan gave the Palestinians limited sovereignty over about half of occupied West Bank and set Abu Dis, east of the occupied holy city of Jerusalem, as their capital.

The US plan would also reportedly give Palestinians’ sovereignty over the Gaza Strip on the condition that the Palestinian resistance movement, Hamas, gave up its arms.

Earlier this year, Arab states warned Jason Greenblatt against revealing the so-called Mideast peace plan, saying disclosing a plan that doesn’t meet Palestinian expectations could agitate the region.

The US has been pushing to conclude the proposal, despite the Palestinian Authority’s rejection of Washington as a mediator between Palestine and Israel after the US relocated its embassy to the occupied Jerusalem.
