The clashes began on Sunday after Israeli forces launched a surprise raid on the site due to gathered intelligence that a group of Palestinians had blockaded themselves inside the mosque and were organising to prevent Jews from accessing the site.

Al Jazeera English reports that the director of endowments of Al-Aqsa Mosque affairs, Azzam Khatib, said that today saw the worst of the violence which has been taking place at the compound for three days since Sunday.

Khatib said that Israeli police used tear gas, rubber bullets, and stun grenades as they stormed the compound this morning.

Middle East Eye reported that Israeli snipers were positioned on the rooftops of the compound and that at least 17 Palestinians were injured in this morning’s clashes.

On Monday, Saudi Arabia’s Foreign Minister Adel Al-Jubeir vowed, “to confront any act of aggression carried out by the Israeli occupation or the Israeli settlers against Al-Aqsa Mosque,” Al Arabiya News reports.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has reached out to U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon to urge the U.N. to respond to Israel’s “breach” of al-Aqsa mosque, Middle East Eye reports.

Erdogan continued that Israel’s raid at al-Aqsa was "unacceptable" and a cause for "serious indignation" in the Muslim world.
