Israel is set to release Palestinian prisoner Muhammad Allan, 31, Wednesday. Allan has been held in administrative detention for one year.

During his imprisonment, Allan undertook a 66 day hunger strike to protest his arrest without trial. Ma’an News Agency reports that the hunger strike put Allan in a coma twice during his imprisonment, bringing him close to death.

It had previously been feared that Allan could have suffered brain damage during his hunger strike, but this claim was dismissed by Qadura Fares, the head of the Palestinian prisoners' society.

Allan’s hunger strike began in June. It was, in his own words, a protest against "the absence of law in Israeli court."

Allan’s detention was suspended on Aug. 19 to allow him to receive medical treatment, Middle East Eye reports.

When his condition improved, Allan was once again detained. Following his re-arrest, he re-started his hunger strike.

Allan had previously been held in prison between 2006 and 2009 for alleged involvement with the group Islamic Jihad.
